We Are Numbers asks the question, “Who are you online?” “How do you want to be perceived online?” The simple way in which this is communicated in the book is through the context of shooting over video calls and through a visual motif in the images. This motif is a phone flash that has been reflected off of the video call images displayed on a screen, and then captured with a secondary camera.

The flash speaks to the simple act of taking a photo on your phone. Specifically the act of taking a selfie for social media. When taking a selfie, you are deciding on how you want to look and be perceived online. The subjects were able to manipulate the compact structure of theirs phones, adjusting preferred distances and angles as well as creating an image of their digital self.
